Neck Pain Solutions: Exercises for Lasting Relief

By Professional Physical Therapy

Neck pain is a common complaint that can affect your daily activities and overall quality of life if it’s not treated. You might experience symptoms such as stiffness, sharp or dull aching, muscle spasms, headaches, and even pain that radiates to the shoulders or arms. Whether your neck pain is due to poor posture, stress, or an injury, it can be a persistent and frustrating issue.

Fortunately, neck exercises can provide significant relief. These exercises help strengthen and stretch the muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance blood circulation. By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you can alleviate pain, reduce stiffness, and prevent future occurrences of neck pain.

If you have pain trying any of these exercises, talk to your doctor or physical therapist. You may feel some tension in your neck muscles when you stretch but you should not have pain. If you do, stop right away.

Five Exercises to Relieve Neck Pain

Below, we review five neck stretches demonstrated by Professional’s Kristin Westover, PT, MPT, CIMT, Regional Director of Operations. You can also view the exercises here. Some of these exercises can even be done on the job to relieve neck strain.

  1. Cervical Rotation
    • How to do it: Sit or stand with your back straight. Turn your head and give gentle overpressure to your cheek.  Make sure that you are applying pressure through your cheek and not your jaw.  Hold for 3-5 seconds, then switch sides.
    • Benefits: Stretches the neck muscles.

Other Remedies to Relieve Neck Pain

In addition to exercises, several other remedies can help alleviate neck pain:

  • Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying a cold pack can reduce inflammation and numb the pain, while heat therapy can relax and soothe the muscles.
  • Proper Posture: Maintaining good posture, especially when sitting for long periods, can prevent neck pain. Ensure your computer screen is at eye level and avoid slouching.
  • Ergonomic Adjustments: Adjust your workspace to promote a neutral neck position. Use an ergonomic chair and place your monitor at the correct height.
  • Massage Therapy: Regular massages can help relieve muscle tension and improve circulation in the neck area.
  • Hydration: Staying hydrated helps keep the discs in your spine healthy and reduces the risk of neck pain.

The Importance of Seeing a Physical Therapist

While home remedies and exercises can be beneficial, seeing a physical therapist is crucial for comprehensive neck pain management. A physical therapist can provide:

  • Personalized Exercise Programs: Tailored to your specific condition and needs, ensuring maximum effectiveness.
  • Manual Therapy: Techniques such as mobilization and manipulation to improve neck mobility and reduce pain.
  • Education: Guidance on proper posture, ergonomics, and lifestyle changes to prevent future neck pain.
  • Monitoring Progress: Regular assessments to track your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

Neck pain can be debilitating, but with the right exercises and remedies, you can find relief and prevent future discomfort. Incorporate exercises into your daily routine, make ergonomic adjustments, and consider seeing a physical therapist for a comprehensive approach to neck pain management.
