physical therapy.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is the rehabilitative process of restoring physical function and mobility, maintaining physical function, and promoting physical activity and proper function. It includes care for vestibular and balance conditions, sports medicine needs, and post-surgical or post-injury recovery. Physical therapy is a comprehensive experience that begins with an initial evaluation and extends through the restorative and preventative stages of recovery.

What does a physical therapist do?

Physical therapists (PTs) are highly trained health care professionals who treat individuals with medical conditions that limit their functional mobility. PTs examine each individual, and develop a plan using treatment techniques to improve the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical therapists also take preemptive measures, working with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs through the development of targeted fitness and wellness programs.

During the first appointment, a physical therapist’s evaluation typically consists of taking the patient’s medical history, conducting a systems review, and performing tests and measures to identify potential and existing problems. To establish treatment plans, physical therapists then perform evaluations, synthesizing the examination data and determining whether the problems to be addressed are within the scope of physical therapist practice. Based on their judgments, physical therapists then offer consultations, conduct re-examinations, modify those consultations as necessary, and develop and implement discharge plans.

The benefits of physical therapy

If you are in need of physical therapy due to pain, injury, or an orthopedic condition, Professional Physical Therapy can help you get back to the activities you love. At Professional, we understand that not all injuries are created equal…and neither should treatment plans. Each patient receives an individualized plan based on their goals and needs.

While injuries can be very similar from one person to the next, we realize that each person’s needs and goals are unique. That’s why we believe in treating the entire person, not just their injury. In addition, many of our clinicians have advanced certifications and training, with the ability to offer specialized therapeutics, such as McKenzie Method®, Manual Therapy, Vestibular Therapy, TMJ Therapy, and many others.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?

In most cases, no. Thanks to Direct Access laws in many of our service areas, you can schedule an evaluation with a Professional Physical Therapy clinician without a physician referral. Some insurance plans or states may still require one, so it’s worth checking your specific coverage. Learn more about Direct Access in your state.
  • What should I expect at my first physical therapy appointment?

Your first visit starts with a one-on-one consultation with a licensed physical therapist. They’ll review your medical history, discuss your goals, and perform hands-on tests to assess your mobility, strength, and pain levels. From there, your PT will build a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific injury or condition — not a one-size-fits-all program. See our full guide to your first visit for what to bring and how to prepare.
  • How many physical therapy sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients see meaningful improvement in just a few visits, while others — especially those recovering from surgery or a more complex injury — may need care over several weeks or months. Your physical therapist will give you a personalized estimate after your initial evaluation and adjust your plan as you progress.
  • Does insurance cover physical therapy?

Most major insurance plans cover physical therapy, including Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Medicare, and many regional carriers across NY, NJ, CT, MA, and NH. Coverage details (like copays and visit limits) vary by plan, so our team can help verify your benefits before your first visit. View our full list of insurances we accept.
